Here we have a nicely tidy and ready to play 7 1/4" gauge Romulus with a twist,..... a Sweet William marine boiler and Sweet William saddle tank. The boiler is a professionally made steel jobby with all it's historic certs and paperwork, as well as a fresh hydraulic and steam test so you're all set to play.
There are two injectors and an axle pump running through a footplate mounted bypass valve to get your water in. Lubrication is mechanical on on the side as per the photos below. The handbrake is nicely placed to use whilst running, but the loco is fitted with vacuum brakes, again the control and gauge are illustrated in the photos.
The bottom end was a little sloppy when she first came in, so we've re-bushed where necessary and skimmed up the crossheads and die block slides so she's nicely tightened up again, ready to go. The tank incidentally is stainless so it should be nicely rust proof, and the frames are powder coated so it's pretty hardy and should stand up well to any use.
We think this appears to have been a Romulus that has perhaps been re-boilered at some point and fitted with a saddle tank,..... we reckon that's probably why the bottom end is red, not blue.
We've just had an email from the original builder who recognised his loco, so we can add more history to the model,......."The frames were for a Romulus but that is where it stopped. Blackgate came up trumps with cylinder castings and at a price to fit my pocket. The wheels I had cast from a pattern lent to me. The pattern was from a 71/4 Bagnall. The boiler was tubing that I was given, including the paper work. I machined the plates and took them to Bell boilers in Gloucester, who completed the construction and certification. The tender was 'enlarged' from sweet Pea drawing. I first ran it in 1997/8 and sadly in 2008 I found myself in a position where I had to sell it. It was great fun running it and a great learning experience. It was all build on a Myford M7. I could not manage to bore the cylinders and a friend offered to bore them to 2.25 precisely. I have now just finishing 1/3 scale Milner Quarry Hunslet. I hope who ever buys it has lots of fun!"
